Dopo aver portato a termine una pericolosa missione, James Bond viene incaricato di scoprire gli organizzatori e le ragioni di un misterioso traffico di diamanti, che minaccia di sconvolgere il mercato mondiale. James Bond viene incaricato di scoprire la produzione di sofisticatissimi microchips da computer simili a quelli realizzati nella Silicon Valley. Ovviamente, anche i Servizi segreti sovietici sono interessati all’affare, Bond viene inviato a Parigi, dove avvicina Max Zorin – un industriale di orgine russa – fingendo di interessarsi ad un acquisto in un allevamento di cavalli. Nella villa di Zorin, aiutato da un collega,. Bond riesce a penetrare in un laboratorio sotterraneo e là trova le prove che gli occorrono. Il collega, tuttavia, viene ucciso da May Day, una spietata collaboratrice di Zorin, che per poco non riesce ad uccidere anche Bond. Zorin, è in realtà un agente del KGB, ora deciso a tradire i russi e a vendere loro un progetto spettacolare: provocare nel sottosuolo della Silicon Valley un movimento tellurico, destinato a distruggere tutte le installazioni tecnologiche. Bond riesce ad individuare la base operativa di Zorin e vi si introduce, accompagnato da Stacey Sutton figlia di un ex proprietario del luogo. Dopo aver recuperato al Cairo, battendo la spia sovietica Anya Armasova, un microfilm con il segreto per sconvolgere le difese atomiche della Nato, James Bond, viene incaricato di far luce sulla scomparsa di due sommergibili nucleari.
